Global Padel Report

The Global Padel Report, a comprehensive study provided by Playtomic together with the consulting firm Deloitte, provides a valuable detailed analysis of the evolution and growth of the padel market.

Padel's Growth

The popularity of padel has seen significant growth since 2016, demonstrated by the increase in searches for the word “Padel” on Google. Although tennis is still searched for five times more than padel, the gap is narrowing, signalling huge growth potential for padel in terms of visibility.

The padel universe spans more than 90 countries, with 51 national federations integrated into the International Padel Federation (FIP). With more than 18 million active players and more than 300,000 members, padel is proving to be a sport on the rise.

Insights and Analysis

Padel, with its versatility to be played indoors or outdoors, has great appeal. The cost of court construction and maintenance is lower than other sports, making it more accessible. This has led to exponential growth in the number of courts and clubs being built, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21% between 2016 and 2021.

Padel clubs have become social centres, organising events, classes, tournaments and many of them offer catering services. In fact, 57% of Playtomic players “have a drink after playing”, according to a survey of a sample of 10,000 players.

The similarity between padel and tennis, a sport that is developing globally, is driving the growth of padel.

Clubs and Smart Courts

Just 2% of clubs are using home automation, a growing trend that helps to save energy and reduce costs. However, in the Nordic countries, this percentage rises to 15%, indicating large business opportunities in this segment.

Competitions and Federations

The rise of padel in some countries has been driven by local and global federations such as the FIP. These federations organise local competitions with licensed players, which has led to an exponential increase in the number of licences in recent years. Through these federations, padel lessons can be booked.

The creation of the World Padel Tour (WPT) has marked a milestone in the sport, providing professional players with a platform to make a living from the sport and be recognised as international athletes.

Brands, Sponsors and Relevant Public Figures

The involvement of major sports figures has stimulated the development of padel worldwide. Some of these figures, now retired from their previous sports, inspire people of all ages to take up padel.

On the one hand, we have multisport brands that invest in padel by creating sports teams, which generates a great attraction towards the public already familiar with these brands.
